Jake Plummer sees pro potential in Brock Osweiler

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler had a decision to make when he was a senior at Flathead High School in Kalispell, Montana.

Play football for Dennis Erickson at ASU or basketball for Mark Few at Gonzaga.

Sun Devil fans are happy he chose Tempe.

The junior starter has emerged as one of the better quarterbacks in the pass-happy Pac-12 and has led the Devils to the top of the South standings. Osweiler has thrown for nearly 2000 yards, completed 66% of his passes with 15 touchdowns and only eight interceptions through the first seven games. He has also developed into one of the leaders in the locker room during his first full season under center.

With more experience, will likely come an even better understanding of the game and possibly a future in the NFL after his playing days in Tempe are over.

“He’s going to get some looks from the NFL,” former Sun Devil and 10-year NFL Pro-Bowl quarterback Jake Plummer told Brad Cesmat on “Big Guy on Sports.” “But my advice to him would be come back and play college ball one more year and enjoy what you’re doing.”

For now, Osweiler’s focus is the Colorado Buffaloes who visit Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday. ASU (5-2, 3-1) holds the tie-breaker over USC (6-1, 3-1) after defeating the Trojans earlier this month. A win over the struggling Buffs (1-7, 0-4) would keep Erickson’s team in the Top 25 and move the Devils closer to a re-match with Oregon or a date with Andrew Luck and Stanford for the Pac-12 Championship.

ASU’s return to the national spotlight has brought a smile to Plummer’s face.

“They’re doing well. I like what I see,” Plummer said. “I think they’re right there. They can play with anybody.”

Following their bye week, the Sun Devils are looking to bounce back from their 41-27 loss to 7th-ranked Oregon in Eugene on October 15.

Saturday is Homecoming for ASU with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
