Diamondbacks make off-season moves

slider big_guy_graphicA early Christmas present arrived for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. A left-handed power hitting outfielder named Jason Kubel signed with the team…a two-year deal worth $15 million. That’s not the kind of cash you throw around for a player that is going to sit the bench or be called on to pinch hit in the 8th inning. He will be the starting left fielder for the team when the season opens up.

Kubel balances out the diamondbacks lineup, with Miguel Montero as the left-handed bats, the middle of the line-up now has more pop with Justin Upton and Paul Goldschmidt sandwiched around Kubel.

The Diamondbacks haven’t made significant moves in the off-season, but they have strengthened themselves and appear to be the class of the National League West.

I say that knowing that the team was trying to acquire a veteran pitcher to go along with Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson off the top of the rotation. With yesterdays move for a position player rather than a pitcher it’s safe to say that the team has options if they wanted to make a deal involving Parra or Chris Young for a front line starter.

They will go into spring with a surplus of young arms to fight it out for the fifth spot in the rotation.
