Gundy talks BCS, Stanford as Fiesta Bowl is set

If anyone has a right to complain about the current BCS format it’s Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. 

Yes, his 2nd-ranked Cowboys (11-1, 8-1) will tangle with Andrew Luck and Stanford in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 2, but many feel they deserve to be in New Orleans, not Glendale, playing top-seeded LSU for a national championship.

Instead, we will see Alabama-LSU Round 2 from The Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 9.

“There was disappointment last night (Sunday) with our players and our staff,” Gundy told Brad Cesmat on “Big Guy on Sports” Monday. “I wanted our team to be disappointed. I would have been disappointed if they weren’t upset that we didn’t have a chance to play in that game.”

For now, Gundy understands rules are rules.

“We believe in the system,” he explained to Cesmat. “We signed up for it. Nothing’s perfect. We would all love to have a playoff system, but these are college students. They’re trying to get a degree.”

With a chance at national title no longer a reality, Gundy and the Pokes focus their attention on stopping Heisman Trophy-frontrunner Luck and Stanford’s high-powered offense in what he considers to be a showcase of two of the countries best teams.

“It’s a great matchup…you may have the best game. Everybody is going to be fired up to watch Andrew Luck and (Oklahoma State quarterback) Brandon Weedon.”

This will be OSU’s first crack at a BCS bowl.
