Betty Fairfax beats Chavez in tight game

The Stampede vs. The Champions…sounds like a great matchup and perfect way to wrap up the MLK Basketball Classic at GCU Arena doesn’t it?

You’d be correct in that assumption.

In his usual fashion, Betty Fairfax senior center Stacy Davis dominated both ends of the floor and gave Cesar Chavez major headaches.

Davis pumped in 26 points to lead all scores, as Fairfax won “The Battle of Laveen,” beating Chavez 58-53 in a very well played and exciting game.

The Stampede led 26-23 at half, and wouldn’t stretch the lead much more than that, as the Champions stayed play-for-play with them the entire game.

There were quite a few sequences in the third quarter that were too helter skelter for both teams, showing they were pressing a bit too much to get distance from their town rival. That didn’t take away from the entertainment factor of it all.

Following the game, senior forward Marquez Jackson grabbed the “championship” trophy and gathered his teammates together to celebrate their big win over the Champions.

So until the next time the Stampede and the Champions meet, Betty Fairfax has bragging rights after Monday night’s win.
