Sun Devils drop fifth in six games; 60-54 to Washington

slider asu _washingtonHusky guard Tony Wroten scored 22 points, had six rebounds and three assists, as Washington walked out of Wells Fargo Arena a winner, 60-54 over the Sun Devils.

Forward Jonathan Gilling was 5-of-12 from three-point range, and had 20 points in 39 minutes of play for Arizona State.

“I’m just disappointed with the loss,” said Gilling.

“I really thought we could’ve beat these guys,” he said. “I don’t think they’re any better than us, they’re maybe more athletic but I don’t think they’re player for player better than us.”

Neither team came out guns-a-blazing in the first half, as both teams shot under 40-percent in the half. Arizona State had a tentative two-point lead at halftime.

A telling stat from the first 20 minutes: the Sun Devils didn’t attempt a single free throw. They ended up 9-of-16 from the line.

Center Jordan Bachynski had nine points and 13 rebounds. He struggled again from the free-throw line, hitting just three of his seven attempts.

“I’m just trying to do what Coach said, and pickup a little more,” Bachynski said. “I’m just trying to carry my weight on the team.”

Guard Trent Lockett was again in street clothes, as he’s still dealing with an ankle sprain he suffered earlier in the month.

“At this point we have to continue to be prepared to not play with him,” head coach Herb Sendek said.

Sendek said with the quick turnaround for Saturday’s home game with Washington State, and Lockett not participating in practice, it’s unlikely he’ll be in the starting lineup against the Cougars.

Arizona State continued their turnover woes. They had 15 turnovers in the game and hit seven of their 23 three-point shots. The Sun Devils shot 37-percent from the field for the game.

“It’s the plays we’re capable of making that we didn’t make that really stand out to me right now,” Sendek said.

With the loss, Arizona State falls to 6-14, 2-6 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Cougars game on Saturday will tip at 3 p.m.
