Brophy slides past Tolleson in OT to reach soccer finals

Have you ever heard the phrase “It’s not over until it’s over?”

Well, in the case of the playoff soccer game between Brophy and Tolleson on Wednesday night, truer words couldn’t have been spoken.

Tolleson had a 2-0 lead in the second half, and they had the Brophy boys on the ropes.

Then all of a sudden, the lights came on for the Broncos.

Strikers David Lane and Clarence Clark scored just seconds apart from each other to tie the game at two.

The game would run to a second overtime, with striker Riggs Lennon getting the winning goal for Brophy, as they would go on to beat Tolleson 3-2, and advance to Saturday’s championship game.

They’ll take on the No. 4 seeded Hamilton Huskies, who took out No. 1 Chaparral 5-0 in the nightcap.

Lennon said there was a small seed of doubt that crept in his mind when they were down two goals, but overall he believed he and his team would come back to win.

“I was a little bit doubtful, but never give up on your team,” Lennon said.

Brophy has a chance to repeat as state champions if they can beat the Huskies on Saturday night.

Clark knows how big it would be for the Broncos to bring another championship to the Academy.

“That would be awesome,” Clark said.

“Last year winning the state championship…this year winning it just for all my seniors…I’m just doing it all for them right now.”

Brophy and Hamilton will fight for it all on Saturday night at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert.

The game starts at 6 p.m.
