Drew to start season on disabled list

It has been a little over eight months since Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew slid into home vs the Milwaukee Brewers and had a nasty break to his ankle.

With it being the week of the start of the 2012 season, Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson stated that Drew has not progressed enough during spring training and will start the year on the disabled list.

“I never thought about Opening Day, I always thought about just coming in and seeing where I’m at day by day,” said Drew.

Drew mentioned that baseball movements are still an area where he needs to improve but did mention that his range at shortstop has improved.

“The fielding part has been fine,” Drew mentioned. “For the ankle now, I’m doing it now where it’s strengthening it up.”

Some said at the time of the injury that the severity of the ankle could be career threatening, but it has not been in Drew’s eyes and he has remained positive approaching each day as a step in the right direction.

“I think I’ll be fine,” Drew explained. “I have already went through some tough challenges with this already so it’s just another stepping stone.”
