You’ve gotta love a young man with the first name “Stryker.” Evidentially the Diamondbacks did, because they made Stryker Trahan their first selection in last week’s MLB Draft.
Trahan was the 26th overall selection.
Trahan comes highly regarded from Acadiana HS in Scott, LA, where ESPN ranked him as the best high school catcher in the country in 2012. Trahan was also a Rawlings first team All-American as a senior.
Two weeks before the draft, Trahan said he was traveling the country and working out for various teams. He says when he got the call from the Diamondbacks; his family made him take a dip.
“I got tossed in the pool by my family, and just hung out with [them] all night long,” Trahan said.
Trahan had an opportunity to take some batting practice for the first time with his new team last week at Chase Field, and according to reports, he hit at least one ball in the pool.
Not a bad way to start off your major league career is it?
Of course, Trahan got some love and cheers from his big brothers after doing that.
“That was pretty funny, hearing all those guys cheering for me,” Trahan said. “I wanted to hit a couple more.”
Trahan already has the physical build and is reported to have quick feet, a quick release and impressive arm strength.
Most scouts believe Trahan, instead of catching, might be better suited playing a corner outfield position because of his arm and his above average speed.
Trahan says he comes from a family of catchers, and being behind the plate is where he wants to be.
He does understand that he needs to be flexible in case the organization wants him to play in the outfield.
“In the long haul, if it’s better for me to be in the outfield, then I’d love to be in the outfield,” he said.
