Battle for starting Cardinals QB underway

Arizona Sports News online

The fight between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton for the starting quarterback position in Arizona won’t be decided for quite a while.

That battle kicked off on Tuesday, which was officially Day One of Cardinals training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Even though the players weren’t in pads, and weren’t allowed to make any hard contact with each other, that didn’t make the practice any less intense, especially on the section of the field where the quarterbacks took their snaps.

Both Kolb and Skelton seemed to get an equal amount of snaps with each unit assigned to them, and from my vantage point, both looked pretty good.

Both quarterbacks showed good range and accuracy on most of their throws, and didn’t rush things when the pocket collapsed around them.

On one particular play, Kolb showed some hops.

As his pocket crumbled around him, Kolb stepped past the defensive pressure, scooted a little bit and managed to make the completion.

Skelton, to me, looked very poised as well, especially on short and intermediate routes.

“It’s good to be back out on the field,” Skelton said. “It doesn’t seem like football until you’re back out here with the guys.”

Skelton knows that there’s a lot of baggage that comes with being a quarterback in the NFL.

Having a quarterback battle/controversy doesn’t make it any easier, but Skelton says  he and Kolb are maintaining despite all that’s surrounding them.

“We both know that we’re going to push each other like always, and may the best man win,” Skelton said.

Cardinals fans definitely want the best man to win, because they want their team to win. Who will that be? Only time, continued high performance from one player and one final decision from head coach Ken Whisenhunt will decide that.
