Greenway has talent to push toward title

Sometimes looks can be deceiving.

That was certainly the case for the 2011 Greenway Demon football team who finished 5-5, but could have easily been 7-3 if not for close losses to Liberty (49-48) and Peoria (27-21).

2012 Greenway Demons Schedule
8/24 vs. Sunrise Mountain
8/31 vs. Independence
9/7 @ Agua Fria
9/14 @ Cactus
9/20 vs. Thunderbird
9/28 vs. Glendale
10/5 @ Liberty
10/12 vs. Washington
10/19 vs. Peoria
10/26 @ Moon Valley

Heading into the season opener August 24 against Sunrise Mountain, head coach K.J. Anthony has liked what he’s seen from his team.

“We have a good character group of young men returning,” Anthony told Pros2Preps.com.

Offensively, Anthony will hand the keys to senior Kenneth Heinzerling who takes over under center for graduated Keith Graham who sparkled last year throwing 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Heinzerling will have the luxury of having the Demons two most productive skill players back in running back Mark Dogbah and three-year starting wide receiver Joey McDonald. Dogbah scored 10 total touchdowns and only fumbled once in 112 carries.

The Demons hope to improve across the board defensively after allowing close to 32 points per game last season. McDonald also starred in the secondary registering a team-high 64 tackles.

Junior cornerback Payton Squier returns after picking off a pair of passes as an underclassman in 2011. The unit will look to pick up the slack left behind by former playmaking linebacker DJ Tice who was moved to the offensive line this off-season. Five total starters from last year return on defense.
