New meal plans bring varied reactions

With wheat-crust pizza, smaller cookies and an increase in prices, students of Perry High School are definitely noticing a change this year in school lunches.

With wheat-crust pizza, smaller cookies and an increase in prices, students of Perry High School are definitely noticing a change this year in school lunches.

According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, the federal government is taking out foods with an excess amount of salt and replacing them with healthier options such as fruits, vegetables and whole grain alternatives.

With the Chandler Unified School District removing items such as M&M cookies, Flaming Hot Cheetos and Arizona Tea, students have mixed emotions about the adjustments to their school menu.

“I’m a dancer, so I have a very strict diet.” explained Perry High School sophomore, Alyssa Ghallozi. “When the school cut back on sugary products, and started switching to wheat products I was very happy about that.”

Other students do not feel so optimistic about their new options.

“Things have gotten more expensive, and the portions are smaller,” proclaimed Junior Alex Rodriguez. “Pros, they have this new bomb salad with a whole bunch of chicken.”

The districts change in healthier food selections comes as a surprise both negatively and positively to Puma Nation.
