Red Mtn. gets big road victory, 33-31 over Brophy

Arizona Sports News online

Four turnovers and fifteen penalties will NEVER win you a football game.

Ask the Brophy Broncos about that, because those are the numbers they racked up on Friday night, in a 33-31 loss to  Red Mountain at Phoenix College.

No matter what kind of positive numbers the Broncos put up (239 yards rushing), they were overshadowed by the incredible number of mistakes they made, which ultimately doomed them in the loss.

Case in point: Brophy was up 31-27 in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, and they were trying to seal the victory. They cough up the football, giving Red Mountain a great opportunity to come away with the victory.

Mountain Lions quarterback Mason Thorman would find wide receiver Drake Pierre, who would shake two defenders on his way for the winning score.

Red Mountain head coach Ron Wisniewski took over the program in 2010, and now has his program at 3-0 on the season, with kids that believe they can beat anyone, especially after a hard-fought road victory.

“The one thing with our kids in the three years we’ve been here is that they play hard for four quarters,” Wisniewski said. “Now we feel we have the talent to go along with that work ethic, and it gives us a chance to compete with everybody.”

Thorman threw all but one of the Mountain Lions’ 41 passes on the night, and had a part in all five touchdowns they scored.

Thorman says it “feels amazing” to be undefeated and beat a quality program like Brophy Prep in their own house.

“It’s an amazing statement,” Thorman said. “Red Mountain hasn’t been mentioned that much, but ever since we got Coach Ron Wisniewski, the whole coaching staff and we just changed everything up to our spread offense, everything’s just turned around for us.”
