Hamilton returns to top of DI state football

Arizona Sports News online

Hamilton executed their game plan and then some as they ran the ball, controlled the clock and took home another gold football defeating Mountain Pointe 31-16 in the Division I state title game.

Things got off to a rough start as a Mountain Pointe penalty extended Hamilton’s opening drive allowing them a few plays later to score on a Chad Nelson touchdown catch to make it 7-0.

From there quarterback AJ Thigpen fed running back Kevin Walters the ball and the Huskies took control of the clock keeping the Pride off the field for almost the entire first quarter.

After a Mountain Pointe fumble and holding penalty the Huskies tacked on a field goal to go up 10-0 to open the second quarter.

Pride safety Jalen Brown made a leaping interception but his offense wasn’t able to convert.

The catch of the day came just before the end of the first half, as Hamilton wide receiver Tyler Eggers makes the grab for seven despite being well defended by Travonn White.

Hamilton went into the half leading 17-0.

Things didn’t turn around for Mountain Pointe, as early in the third Levi Sterling intercepted Pride quarterback Antonio Hinojosa for seven.

The Pride finally got on the board in the third quarter when Emmanuel Butler got into the end zone; it was 24-6 after a failed two point conversion.

DB Landry Payne got a big play for the Pride when he intercepted a Thigpen pass, but all their offense could muster is a field goal.

Walters would add a rushing touchdown and MP answered with a score from White, but it was too little too late.
