Wade Miley finishes second in Rookie of the Year voting

On Monday, it was announced that Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed starter Wade Miley finished second in the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year voting behind Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. He received a total of 105 points on a 5-3-1 scoring system. Within those 105 points were 12 out of 32 first-place votes, 13 second-place votes and six third-place votes.

Arguably the most pleasant surprise of the 2012 season for the Arizona Diamondbacks was the pitching from Miley. He went 16-11 on the season with 3.33 ERA in 32 appearances (29 starts) and led all National League rookie pitchers in winning percentage (.593), ERA, wins, quality starts (18), strikeouts (144), innings pitched and was third in opponent batting average (.255). The 16 wins were the most by a NL rookie since 2002 posted by Rockies pitcher Jason Jennings. In addition, his .290 opponent on-base percentage was the lowest by a left-handed rookie since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.

“I would like to congratulate both Mike Trout and Bryce Harper on winning the Rookie of the Year awards,” Miley said. “I am very honored to be mentioned for such a prestigious award and cannot thank my teammates and coaches enough for putting me in position to succeed every time I went to the mound.”

During the season Miley was the first Diamondbacks rookie in franchise history to be selected to the All-star game. He was also recently named the The Sporting News NL rookie of the year in a vote by his NL peers.
