Every week, Scout.com and Sports360az.com recruiting insider Jason Jewell takes us around the state and spotlights the best performances during the high school football season. Here are the stars from Week 0 of the 2014 season.

Player of the Week

* Mountain Pointe’s Paul Lucas proved he might be the state’s most dangerous player. He scored on a kickoff return, rushing and had a receiving TD against Reed. 

Quarterbacks

* Desert Edge’s Tehran Thomas carried the ball 4 times for 58 yards and 2 scores, went 4 of 5 for 86 yards and 2 TDs against South.

* Salpointe’s Sam Muniz rushed the ball for 222 yards against Buena.

Running Backs

* Queen Creek’s Weston Barlow started right where he left off. He rushed for 114 yards and 4 TDs in a win over Poston Butte

* Williams Field’s Braedyn Bushman rushed for 182 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Show Low.

* Breakout party for Liberty’s Jake Schuitebaer. He rushed for 193 yards and 1 score in a win over Ironwood Ridge.

* Cole McLafferty rushed for 150 yards and 1 score for Ironwood Ridge.

* Hamilton junior Kyeler Burke rushed for 83 yards, had 131 receiving and scored twice against O’Connor.

* Give it up for the Parker offensive line. They paved the way for 353 rushing yards on 55 carries against Yuma. RB Ryan Grey led the way with 135 yards and 1 TD.

Taylor Powell added a role versus Buena, RB. He had 7 carries and scored 3 times.

* Lake Havasu’s Austin Stefick had 210 yards and a TD against Kingman.

Receivers

* Sahuarita’s Allyn Williams had 4 catches for 77 yards and 2 TDs against Blue Ridge.

Special Teams/Defense

* Campo Verde sacked Goldwater 6 times. Two were courtesy of Matt Edwards.
