Late-Bloomer Shreiner Ready To Shine In Big 12

Good things come to those who wait.

Case in point, former Glendale High School guard Lyrik Shreiner who saw his game and eventual recruitment expand after a stint at Phoenix Westwind Prep and last year Hillcrest Academy in the north Valley.

Over the weekend the 6’4, 190-pound point guard committed to play at TCU.

“I picked TCU because I felt it was the perfect situation,” Shreiner told Sports360AZ.com. “From the great coaching staff, the city…the campus. I feel that the Big 12 is the best basketball conference in the country.”

It also appears to be a perfect situation for the Horned Frogs who will add a dynamic scorer who holds the Arizona state record for points in a single game with 65. What’s even more remarkable, he was 26 of 27 from the field in the record-breaking performance.

Schreiner is far from a finished product. One analyst told Sports360AZ.com his game is still inconsistent and his play erratic but he has the ability to finish at the rim and competes with aggression. He averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists last season for the 21-6 Hillcrest Hawks and said his favorite NBA player is Russell Westbrook.

One of the Horned Frog staffers Shreiner connected with immediately was head coach Trent Johnson who has helped build the program from the bottom up the past three seasons in what many would consider the deepest and most talented power five league.

“Coach Johnson has tremendous faith in me as a player and a person,” he explained. “We both believe that I can come in and have an immediate impact and match up against the other great point guards in the league.”

Shreiner’s work in the class room is just as impressive accumulating a 3.6 grade-point-average and scoring 28 on his ACT exam–placing him in the 91st percentile nationally among students who took the test.

He held offers from Oregon, Cincinnati and others before selecting the Frogs (17-14, 4-14) who open Big 12 Tournament play Wednesday in Kansas City against Kansas State.
