Jordan HammBrophy’s Isaiah Oliver is the epitome of versatility. On the football field, he was a huge catalyst to the Broncos’ turnaround and playoff run, catching 12 touchdowns, intercepting seven passes, and blocking five field goals in 2014.
The whole “versatility” thing translates pretty well to the track too.
Oliver brought home three state titles in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, and 4X400 relay on Saturday.
“It feels fantastic to come out and start out with the 110s and win that, then go to the 300s,” Oliver said. “To finish off with a great team effort at the 4X400s…that’s a great day.”
Oliver made his mark on the record books, placing third all-time in the state in the 300-meter hurdles. The two ahead of him? Former Brophy Broncos Devon Allen and Robert Brooks.
“I wanted the record, but a state title…you can’t be mad at that,” Oliver joked. “For us to all be top three in the state, that’s pretty impressive.”
A football and track commit to the University of Colorado, Oliver said his versatility has been a huge factor to his success in both sports.
“My dad was a decathlete, so I’ve always been doing a bunch of different events,” Oliver said.
“I feel like track translates athleticism to any other sport as well. So that really helped me on the football field playing offense, defense, special teams, blocking kicks. Whatever they asked me to do, I was just able to do. I really thank that to track.”
While Oliver may thank track for his versatility, opponents on and around the gridiron may curse it.
