Mike Bell, D-Backs Director of Player Development:

“I expect him to have a big year this year. He performed well in the Cal League last year considering his age. He played outstanding and every day at short, he managed his at-bats well last year. We are going to send him back there this year at just 20 and I think he is really going to blossom.”

Notes:

(Updated 7/6) Leyba’s 2016 campaign to this point has been a very exciting one for the Diamondbacks organization. A player who’s defensive skills were far beyond his hitting coming into the year is seeing that gap closing more and more by the day. He is spraying the ball over the field with 21 of his 88 hits being doubles. He has already passed his double, home run and walk marks from his 2015 season with Visalia and is hits, stolen bases and runs scored aren’t far behind wit significantly less at bats. Leyba has the tools to be an all-star short stop one day if he can continue to put it all together in both phases of the game.
