Sun Devil Trifecta: Saguaro Trio Commit to ASU Together

Arizona Sports News online

When it comes to high school football recruiting in Arizona, friday brought us something we have not seen often, if not ever. Three members of the defending champion Saguaro Sabercats in Kyle Soelle, Jared Poplawski and Corey Stephens have announced together that they will be committing to stay in-state and play for Arizona State.

Kyle Soelle bursted onto the scene last season as a member of the Notre Dame Prep Saints before transferring to Saguaro this winter. Soelle was one of the must recruited players in Arizona during spring evaluation period as he added 16 scholarship offers. The 6-4, 220 pounder is an impact player on both sides of the ball as a running back or full back on offense and outside linebacker on defense. He had just under 600 all purpose yards in 2015 with seven touchdowns plus five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Jared Poplawski played a big role in the dynamic Saguaro offense last season. Byron Murphy and Julian Carter made some of the highlight real plays down the field but Mr. Reliable in that Sabercat offense was Poplawski at the tight end position. He had 14 offers including ASU which was the first he received on the same day as the 2015 Territorial Cup. He had 32 catches for 438 yards and six touchdowns. One of which in the state championship game. ASU has had a good history of local tight ends coming from ASU which include all-time great Todd Heap from Mesa Mountain View and most recently Kody Kohl from Mesquite.

Corey Stephens is one of the leaders of this incredibly talented Saguaro team. He was on the radar of Academy’s and Ivy League schools with his incredible grades and then the Sun Devils came in to give him his first power five offer on Wednesday this week. The 6-3, 285 pound offensive guard had a total of 11 offers. By the time all is said and done at Saguaro, he will have been a three year starter on both sides of the ball for one of the top high school programs Arizona has to offer.

The Saguaro trio now joins Basha quarterback Ryan Kelley as the four in-state commits for the Sun Devils’ 2017 class.
