Week in Review: Home Runs, ‘Round the Rotation

The Arizona Diamondbacks had an impressive week at Chase Field. The Dbacks took both home series, one against the Padres and one against the Brewers. This week the Diamondbacks will head to Detroit for a two-game series beginning on Tuesday, then will have Thursday off before heading to Philadelphia for a three-game series. Here’s what you need to know from the last week of Dbacks baseball.

Home Runssss

The Diamondbacks had four home runs in the 11-1 win on Sunday, three of which were in the seventh inning. Brandon Drury led off and hit a shot to right. Then Daniel Descalso singled to bring up Chris Herrmann. Herrmann fired one to right for his sixth home run on the year.

David Peralta then stepped into the box, with two outs and one on for the third home run of the inning to put the Dbacks up 6-0 heading into the eighth.

In the eighth inning, Paul Goldschmidt decided he wanted in on the fun. Goldschmidt hit a grand slam to add more insurance for the Dbacks and secure the sole spot of second place in home runs with 154.

Comebackers

On Saturday, with the Dbacks down 2-1 against the Brewers in the sixth inning, Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead two-run home run to mount the comeback for the Snakes. The Diamondbacks now have 22 comeback wins in 2017, leading the National League.

‘Round the Rotation

With roster moves being made and a rehab assignment ending, the rotation may see a little bit more consistency. On Tuesday, Zack Greinke will start in Detroit. On Wednesday, manager Torey Lovullo has Taijuan Walker slated to start granted all goes well in the next couple days of rehab. Walker went on the DL at the end of May with a blister on his right finger.

The rest of the week is still to be announced. Godley’s numbers have been impressive enough to seemingly earn him a spot in Phoenix, while Randall Delgado has seen success as a starter. Patrick Corbin has the highest ERA in the rotation at 5.55 and is 5-6 on the year. His spot is most in question with the success of Godley and Delgado, especially if Walker comes back as consistent as he was before going to the DL.

Robbie Ray continues to be lights out for the Diamondbacks. Last Tuesday against the Padres, Ray went 6 2/3 allowing one run on three hits, with two walks and 11 strikeouts. On Sunday against the Brewers, Ray went 6 2/3 allowing three hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts. Ray is 5-0 in his last five starts and has 48 strikeouts.

Rehab/Roster Updates

On Saturday, pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen was informed he was being designated for assignment. Wilhlemsen has five days to be traded or placed on waivers by the Diamondbacks. If neither of those two options happen, then Wilhelmsen can elect free agency or accept a minor-league assignment.

AJ Pollock is continuing to make improvements in rehab and should be heading out on a minor-league assignment soon, before returning to the Diamondbacks. Pollock has been out since May 14 with a groin injury.

Yasmany Tomás will remain in Arizona for the upcoming road trip as he rehabs his groin injury.

All-Star Status?

Jake Lamb and Paul Goldschmidt moved up the in the All-Star Balloting this week, while Chris Owings remains at No. 5 for shortstops.

Lamb entered the top five for third basemen. Goldy moved up to third on the ballot for first basemen behind Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals and Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs.
