Salpointe’s Ransom Focused on The Opening Prior to College Decision

Frisco, TX –

Salpointe Catholic safety Lathan Ransom has juggled his recruitment and playing at a high level in the camp circuit this offseason, and he may be coming to a decision on his college landing spot in a mere two weeks.

The four-star safety hopes to have his mind made up by July 16th, his 17th birthday.

He will have to mull over the pros and cons of Ohio State, Texas and Notre Dame, but this week he wanted to put his focus on performing well at The Opening.

“It’s cool because not a lot of people from Arizona come out here,” Ransom said of The Opening. “(Pinnacle quarterback Spencer Rattler) came out here and balled last year. Definitely not a lot of people from Tucson come out here, and it’s super cool to come from Arizona and compete.”

Ransom is one of the most highly-sought after defensive backs in the nation, and 247Sports ranks him as the #2 safety in the 2020 class. According to 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins, Ransom continues to rise up the class ranks and is a top-50 prospect.

“If you didn’t know he was a safety, you would have thought he was a cover guy,” Biggins said. “He was covering guys without looking stiff, moves very well, fluid in his hips. A lot of safeties are safeties because they can’t really cover. He has a safety frame, but he’s an athlete.”

Texas and Ohio State are also heavily recruiting his Salpointe teammate and friend Bijan Robinson. Ransom said the two want to come to their respective commitments individually, but the opportunity to play together at the next level would be a blessing.

They also are able to exchange notes on campuses they have visited.

“Every time he goes to visit, every time I come back from a visit, we tell each other how it was, tell each other the good things and the bad things too. We’re looking out for each other because we’re brothers at the end of the day.”

Robinson may not be the only Arizona playmaker Ransom could team up with at the next level. If he pledges to Ohio State, he would join Chaparral quarterback Jack Miller and potentially Robinson and Saguaro cornerback Kelee Ringo as Buckeyes.

Ransom, Ringo and Robinson could also team up at Texas, joining 2019 Longhorn commits Jake Smith and Brayden Liebrock to go from the desert to Austin.

If Ransom wants to become a member of the Fighting Irish, he would create quite a duo with Pinnacle offensive tackle Tosh Baker, who committed in May.

There are plenty of possibilities for the talented safety, but for now, he’s focused on his next play at The Opening.
