Many have been hit hard by the news that schools will not return to campus for the remainder of the academic year. It’s a tough and transformative time for all, but especially for the senior class, the class of 2020. Sports360AZ wants to hear from those seniors on how they’re adjusting, what they’re feeling and how this experience can make them stronger moving forward in a new segment we call “2020 Vision.”
Millennium High School senior basketball star Alexandra Zelaya will be the first to admit she’s a “homebody.”
So while some of her teammates and classmates still may be adjusting to quarantined life in the current COVID-19 pandemic, Zelaya’s time at home with her family in the west Valley has gone rather smoothly.
“My family is so important to me so to be able to spend this time with them,” Zelaya explained earlier this week. “It was difficult to adjust to because everyone is home from college and work but my family has been so supportive and we’ve been staying positive and staying together in this.”
Zelaya, arguably the most decorated girl’s basketball player in the class of 2020, is still working hard physically before leaving to for the University of North Carolina in the coming months. She committed to the Tar Heels last August.
“I’m continuing my basketball training, I have a hoop in my backyard,” she said. “I’ll continue to do my workouts. North Carolina sent me a workout to get prepared. I try to stay with the schedule.”
With that being said, a couple of MHS experiences she was looking forward – prom and graduation – are no longer on the schedule because of the coronavirus disease.
“Those are the two things you look forward to,” Zelaya said. “I did order a prom dress and got it…so it’s a little disappointing but I’m so excited to go on to that next step and go to college. I’m just trying to stay positive and look forward to what’s coming for me…I’m so excited to go to North Carolina. That’s my focus now.”

Zelaya led the Lady Tigers to back-to-back 5A State Championships under long-time head coach Courtland Rojeck, who officially resigned for personal reasons just hours after her interview with Sports360AZ.com.
