Herm Edwards on Spring Practice and Jayden Daniels

The Super Bowl is over, but football never ends. For Arizona State, spring ball is around the corner and according to Herm Edwards, it will begin as scheduled on March 3.

“The players are working out right now actually,” Edwards said on The Brad Cesmat Show. “We’re preparing for March and hopefully we’ll get more than seven practices in. I think we will now that we know forks up, masks up, test negative, that’s our rule around here.”

The Sun Devils have a lot to work on following a 2-2 season that was decimated by a COVID-19 outbreak within the program and two last-minute losses to the schools in southern California.

It starts with Jayden Daniels, who needs to add weight to his frame before the 2021 season and beyond.

“Right now he’s about 190 [pounds],” Edwards said. “I think he’ll be close to 200 [pounds] by this summer. He’s got a frame on him, but his metabolism just eats up everything.”

Before Daniels heads towards the draft either next April or in 2023, Edwards believes he needs to bulk up to about 205 pounds in order to sustain hits from NFL caliber defenders.

There’s been some shuffling among the coaching staff this offseason. Antonio Pierce is now the solo defensive coordinator and they hired three new position coaches: Mike Cavanaugh (OL), Adam Breneman (TE), and Chris Claiborne (LB). The players are excited to run it back and build rapport with the newest members of the staff as well.

“Our players are just excited about participating in spring,” Edwards said.
