Under head coach Bryce Drew, the Grand Canyon University men’s basketball program continues to make strides in the transfer portal, as the Lopes landed a commitment from former Arizona State guard Holland Woods.

Woods, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard who averaged 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in his lone season as a Sun Devil, announced his intentions to play for GCU on Monday afternoon.

Prior to his stop at Arizona State, Woods played at Portland State, where he was a Big Sky Freshman of the Year and was an all-conference selection multiple times. He is still listed as the Vikings all-time leader in assists and steals, and is fifth all-time in points with 1,387.

A valley native, Woods played his high school ball on the west side of town at Apollo. He is the second Arizona State transfer to join the Lopes, along with former Sun Devil forward Taeshon Cherry.

Woods is also the fourth player to transfer in from a Power Five School this offseason, joining Cherry, Aidan Igiehon (Louisville transfer), and Yvan Ouedraogo (Nebraska transfer)

The Lopes nearly landed a third transfer from ASU in Jaelen House, as he listed the Lopes in his final two schools that he was considering, but House opted to attend New Mexico instead

With Woods in the backcourt, he’ll look to be right in the mix along with returning point guard Jovan Blacksher Jr.
