Arizona State’s hiring of Herm Edwards as their new head coach over the weekend raised eyebrows across the country but one person in NFL circles who knows Edwards and his outgoing, upfront personality well is SI.com Senior Writer/’The MMQB’ Peter King.
“None of what he’s saying is an act,” King said to Sports360AZ.com’s Brad Cesmat via Skpye Tuesday morning of the Sun Devils’ new leader. “This is really him. He’s a modern-day Dick Vermeil.”
King believes the nine-year, now former, ESPN NFL analyst was desperate to coach after being fired by the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2008.

With Edwards’ quirkiness, come skeptics and “football purists” who believe ASU Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson’s biggest hire is a reach at best.
“I understand people are skeptical of this,” King explained to Cesmat. “I happen to think Herman Edwards is going to be a great recruiter. You need to have this enthusiasm, this drive.”

Can Edwards not only win over top-level prospects but big games, as well? King isn’t so sure.
No one is.
Only time will tell.
King says, for now, just enjoy the ride Sun Devil Nation.
