Stanford-Bound Hatch Prioritizes Life On, Off Court

Logan Hatch’s smile is infectious, much like the work he does on the court and in the community . As a senior forward on the Poston Butte High basketball team he sets the tone with his team-first play on one of the top squads in the southeast Valley. More importantly, the Stanford University-bound Hatch enjoys helping others around him when he’s not hustling for a loose ball or hitting the books.

“Studying and basketball is a lot of my life but I do like to volunteer a lot,” Hatch recently said to Sports360AZ.com. “We [go] to the Salvation Army and with the United Blood Service we have blood drives four times a year. It’s one of my big passions throughout the school year.”

On the court, Hatch’s passion is evident for the 20-6 Broncos who are currently riding a six-game win streak into the weekend after their overtime home win against Tucson Cholla Thursday night.

“This year he’s taken more of a leadership role,” Poston Butte head coach Mike Christenson said to Sports360AZ.com. “He makes a difference on the court for us because he’s our biggest, strongest guy. I could talk all night about what a great kid Logan is. He works so hard.”

Hatch’s years of hard work has enabled him the opportunity to continue his academic career at one of the more prestigious universities in the world. It’s not uncommon for the laser-focused senior to stay up until 2:00 or 3:00 A.M. completing his homework according to his head coach. Throughout his academic journey, he has always been appreciative of his teachers and mentors who have helped pave his way to Stanford.

Although he would cherish the opportunity to play basketball at the next level, Hatch has his priorities in place starting in the classroom.

“I love the sport,”  he said. “But for me academics come first. I’ve always been a student-athlete and student is the first part of that equation. If I did get an offer [to play] from another school, I’d have to thank them very much but Stanford is Stanford.”

It’s evident Logan Hatch is wise well beyond his years.

A Valley native, Eric has had a passion for the Arizona sports scene since an early age. He has covered some of the biggest events including Super Bowls, national championships and the NBA and MLB playoffs in his near 20 years in local media.
