Back in February of 2011, Arizona State running back Deantre Lewis was hit by a stray bullet from somewhere in a neighborhood when visiting of a relative in Riverside, California.
Lewis was one of ASU’s top rushers back in the 2010 season as a true freshman when he rushed for 909 total yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.
Because of the injuries from having the bullet removed, he was forced to miss the entire 2011 season.
Now going into his redshirt sophomore season, Lewis has made his way back to the field and has participated fully in Todd Graham’s spring practices.
“At times I feel the same explosion,” said Lewis. “At times it feels like I am not trusting in my leg which is something I need to work on.”
“He has continued to progress,” added Todd Graham. “It’s almost like it feels differently so he has to re-train his leg.”
The spring is just the start for Lewis, who played with contact for the first time since the end of the 2010 season at the first spring scrimmage. But he has his focus on what is ahead of him, and that is running out of the tunnel of Sun Devil Stadium this fall.
“I don’t think he is anywhere close to 100% right now, but he’s going to get there,” Graham mentioned.
