Jordan HammHighland’s Ammon Allen was one of the most versatile players in Arizona in 2020. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound senior Hawk was second on the team in tackles with 89. In the last two years, he’s notched eight tackles for loss and intercepted six passes. Offensively, he accumulated 686 total yards, caught five touchdowns, rushed for two scores and threw for one in 2020. The National Football Foundation Valley o the Sun Chapter named him the Mike Haynes Defensive Back of the Year.
On Monday, he announced he’ll take that versatility to Tucson and play for Jedd Fisch and the Arizona Wildcats.
He also holds offers from NAU, Air Force, Navy, New Mexico State, Army, Eastern Michigan and South Dakota State. Jedd Fisch and his staff wasted little time offering Allen after compiling the Arizona staff.
Although they haven’t known each other long, Allen instantly connected with Fisch, defensive coordinator Don Brown and secondary coach Chuck Cecil. Allen jumped at the opportunity to play within the Wildcat defense and study business at Arizona’s renowned Eller College.
Allen and his parents took a self-guided tour of Tucson after being offered. Not only did they see the football stadium, but also the Arizona campus as a whole. When they walked the campus, Allen felt a sense of “peace,” confirming his decision.
The Versatility of Ammon Allen
Allen will play the Viper position in the Don Brown defense, which is essentially a safety and linebacker hybrid. The safety said Brown loves the way his new commit “smashes” other players. That hard-nosed mentality and versatility should translate well into the Wildcats’ system.
Allen committed just two days after class of 2022 Hamilton offensive lineman Grayson Stovall made his pledge to the Wildcats as well. Valley natives Gunner Maldonado, Drake Anderson, Jason Harris and Gunner Cruz have also transferred in from Power 5 programs to jumpstart the Wildcats’ in-state recruiting efforts.
