I’ve reached the point where I would like to have artificial intelligence as the judge and jury of pro sports. Computer systems are supposed to be able to take over tasks that are performed by humans. Far be it from to decide who should become unemployed in their profession, but something has to change when it comes to the act of enforcing rules. I came to this conclusion after watching the strike zone the last couple of World Series games. Nothing is consistent when it comes to the human element. “The strike zone is the first area that is ripe for AI”, said my friend Drew, who works in the Artificial Intelligence industry. “AI is instantaneous, it could never do pass interference, etc. those are judgement calls, we’re a ways from that”. Let’s find out sooner than later…
