As signing day approaches, who’s left?

National Signing Day is just around the corner and most schools are nearly done with their 2012 recruiting class. That being said, there are still two weekends left that a student-athlete can take official visits and a few kids who have patiently been waiting for offers, might get a rapid increase in their recruitment.

Here are some names of players that don’t have an offer currently that could end up signing on Feb. 1.

The first two that came to mind were outside linebacker Chuks Ameachi from Westview and offensive guard Jacob Julian from Bradshaw Mountain, but before this was written, they both received offers.

Ameachi was offered by FCS national champion North Dakota State. Former teammate Jordan Champion signed with the Bison last year.

Julian took an official vis to NAU on Saturday, without an offer. Sunday he received the official offer and he accepted.

There is a strong group of quarterbacks left that do not have offers. Deer Valley’s Auston Hillman, Apollo’s Jon Brown, Notre Dame Prep’s Jordan Gerhke and Marcos de Niza’s Tommy Thornton had very good senior years and are still being recruited by some four year schools and very heavily recruited by the local junior colleges. In fact, Brown, who at one time had an offer from New Mexico State, is committed to Glendale. Gerhke to Scottsdale and Thorton to Mesa.

I think the most talented player in the state without a D1 offer is Desert Ridge defensive end Damani Mosby. He is 6-3 225 pounds, has long arms and can really run. He is tripping to Ft. Hayes State and Pitt State over the next two weekends but I think his best bet is to go to a Valley JC, because in two years he will be a Pac 12-level talent.

No one seems to have mentioned Cibola wide receiver Deante Gaines this year. The jack-of-all-trades player is a big time sleeper from Yuma but has big time talent. He is 6-3 175 pounds and can play on either side of the ball.

Last but not least, the kicker. And we should ask Boise State, Stanford and a few other big time programs how important a kicker is. Desert Mountain’s Matt Foley hit from 52 yards this year and connected from 47 yards three times. He kicks off the ground on field goals and his kickoffs go through the endzone. Fresno State is on him but has not offered.
