History will be made on August 29th.
For the first time in ASU football’s history, the Sun Devils will have a true freshman starting the season-opener: Jayden Daniels.
Herm Edwards announced Monday night after practice the freshman will get the starting nod against Kent State.
The Sun Devils brought in three quarterbacks in this most recent recruiting class to compete with last year’s backup Dillon Sterling-Cole.
Ethan Long was the first public commitment in the Herm Edwards era, but has been moved to more of an athlete role where he could play receiver, tight end, kick returner in addition to being under center in certain packages.
Joey Yellen was next to commit in June, 2019. The decorated California prep quarterback has shown improvement since enrolling this spring and will continue to compete with Sterling-Cole for second on the depth chart.
Daniels committed just a few days before the early signing day in December. The Sun Devils seemingly weren’t in the mix a few months prior to his commitment, but they made up plenty of ground to add the pledge from the dual-sport star.
Edwards has indicated the remaining quarterbacks will continue to compete for the second spot on the depth chart while Daniels holds top billing.
Daniels threw for over 14,000 passing yards in his four-year career at Cajon High School in San Bernadino, CA. He also rushed for 3,645 yards and tallied 201 total touchdowns.
The Sun Devils kick off the 2019 season on August 29th against Kent State.
