ASU Softball loses Clint Myers to Auburn

Arizona Sports News online

Arizona State has lost a softball legend.

Clint Myers is moving on. He is now the new head softball coach at Auburn University.

Myers took the program to incredible heights during his tenure in Tempe, Ariz. He took over the reigns back in 2006, and led the Lady Sun Devils to seven Women’s College World Series appearances and two national championships (2008, 2011).

Myers was 14-10 in the WCWS, and in the eight NCAA Tournaments Arizona State played in, he was 53-15, including an astounding 30-3 at home.

Myers’ overall record at Arizona State is 427-102, which puts him third on the all-time wins list. He was 113-59 in conference play.

Myers wrote a personal letter to the Sun Devil athletic staff and to his players:

“I wanted you to know that the Myers family has decided to make a move. I have been named the new head Softball Coach for the Auburn Tigers. This was a family decision… the reason being, my sons will be coaching with me at this new position. I am thrilled that in the final years of my coaching career that I will be able to mentor and help my sons to start their own college coaching careers. I can only hope that my sons will have the success and wonderful experiences and memories that my family has had while coaching at ASU for the past eight seasons. Wow… LOTS of great memories!!! I am very sad to say good bye, but I am also VERY EXCITED for this amazing opportunity.”

Along with the great won-loss record at Arizona State, Myers turned out some solid young ladies during his time on campus. He’s produced 19 All-Americans, 13 of which were first teamers. There have also been 11 Academic All-Americans, 21 first team all-conference selections, 37 conference players of the week, and four conference players of the year. He was also named Pac-10 Coach of the Year twice.

“As we have talked with Coach Myers over the past few weeks, it is apparent to us that Coach wants to make a move to be with his family,” said Steve Patterson, Sun Devil Vice President for Athletics.

“As great of a coach he is, he is just as great as a father and grandfather, and this move will allow him to be with his family more. Clint has elevated our program to be one of the best, if not the best, in the nation, the past eight years,” Patterson said.

“Because of his efforts, the Sun Devil head coaching position also is one of the best in the nation and we will proceed to hire a great fit for Arizona State that continues the Sun Devil tradition at the highest level. Our list of softball highlights is extensive and will serve as a benchmark as we begin our search.”

“Our record at Farrington Stadium is amazing, our attendance numbers continue to climb, the academic milestones and Sun Devil pride is endless and we continue to make improvements to our stadium and game experience,” Patterson said. “We appreciate Clint for his honesty with us throughout this process and for all his efforts, which will eventually result in a place in our Sun Devil Hall of Fame. We wish Coach and his family all the best on and off the field, and we expect to meet Auburn and Coach Myers in Oklahoma City in late May in the near future.”
