Beanie Wells says he’s “auditioning for a job somewhere else”

Arizona Sports News online

Beanie Wells says his days as an Arizona Cardinal are numbered.

“I’m auditioning for a job somewhere else,” Wells said on Monday. “That’s my mindset, I’m just going out there, putting my best foot forward for all 31 other teams that’s watching.”

Wells has battled numerous injures since becoming a Cardinal back in 2009. Those injuries have severely slowed his progress and has limited his time on the field over the past four seasons.

Perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back for Wells was when head coach Ken Whisenhunt sat Wells from the start of the second quarter through the rest of the game after his first quarter goal-line fumble gave the Bears a 7-0 lead.

The carry that led to the fumble was Wells’ third of the game. He’d carry the ball one more time before being pulled, something he says should not have happened.

Wells was clearly upset in the locker room when asked about being pulled.

“I don’t know…how many turnovers…” Wells said before pausing and finishing his statement. “I don’t want to get into all that, but it is what it is.”

Wells says he and Whisenhunt really have nothing to discuss about his benching.

“I don’t think so,” Wells said. “I got one more game and…hell…let everything else go when it goes from there.”

Wells says he’s seen the writing on the wall for quite a while, and he’s been preparing himself for the “inevitable.”

“You never expect things to unfold the way they do, but it’s a part of life,” Wells said. “You gotta roll with the punches and adjust to them as they come.”

Wells said he and the team haven’t had any “hard discussions” about his future, but he knows he hasn’t held up his part of the bargain since he’s been in Arizona.

“It’s a performance based business,” Wells said. “I don’t know if I’ve done things up to our organization’s standards here.”

“Maybe it’s a discussion we’ll have later on, who knows.”

No matter what happens in the near future, Wells says he’ll continue to be motivated for the game of football.

“Definitely motivated,” Wells said. “I plan to play this game for a long time, I love playing football.”
