Campbell’s efforts against Rams shouldn’t be overlooked

Today Phoenix is buzzing about Patrick Peterson’s electrifying 99-yard punt return for touchdown against St. Louis and deservedly so, but if it wasn’t for 6’8 Calais Campbell the stage may have never been set.

Campbell squeezed through the Rams interior line and blocked Josh Brown’s 42-yard field goal attempt on the final play to preserve the tie and force sudden death.

“The guys around me gave me a great surge,” Campbell told Brad Cesmat Monday on “Big Guy on Sports.” “I tip my hat to (Special Teams Coach Kevin Spencer). He drew up a great play. There are a lot of ways to go about blocking a field goal, but he found a weakness in their protection and we exposed it.”

The win couldn’t have come at a better time for Arizona who entered the contest riding a six-game losing streak and buried at the bottom of the NFC West with St. Louis.

For Campbell, the block was only a part of his excellent all-around game which included 6 tackles (two for loss) , three quarterbacks pressures, and 1.5 sacks.

“I really feel like I can change the game,” Campbell explained to Cesmat. “I give myself a high standard to live up to and I feel like if I can play at a high level, I change a lot of games.”

Following Peterson’s overtime drama, the Red Birds celebrated the big win, but understand the road gets much tougher (literally) with a trip Sunday to Philadelphia against the Eagles, then back-to-back division games against the NFC West-leading 49ers, followed by a re-match with the Rams in St. Louis.

Kickoff against the Eagles is 11:00AM Sunday.
