The news of running back Ryan Williams needing season-ending shoulder surgery sent shockwaves through the NFL on Monday.
On Tuesday it was made official: Williams was placed on injured reserve.
With Williams departure, the running game gets even thinner. Currently, the Cardinals have three backs on the roster: LaRod Stephens-Howling, William Powell and Alfonso Smith.
Whether or not the team looks for help from the outside remains to be seen, but head coach Ken Whisenhunt didn’t rule it out on Monday following practice.
With Williams roster spot open, the team brought back cornerback Crezdon Butler, who spent the preseason with the Cardinals before being released in the final set of cuts on August 31.
Butler was picked up by the Redskins and played in two games before being released on September 25.
Butler originally joined the Cardinals off waivers from the Steelers on September 4, 2011. He played in one game last season before being placed on injured reserve on September 20 due to an ankle injury.
Butler will wear jersey No. 32.
