Dave Zastudil destroyed the ball last season for the Cardinals, but now he’s got some competition at the punter spot. The team announced on Monday that they have signed free-agent punter Will Batson to a one-year contract.
Batson was in training camp with the Tennessee Titans last season, before being released on August 26.
Batson has yet to make an NFL roster. He played his entire four-year collegiate career at North Alabama. He punted 141 times for 5,756 yards (40.8 ypp), and placed 38 punts inside the 20-yard line. Batson also had 15 touchbacks.
The downed punts is something Batson and Zastudil have in common, except for the fact that Zastudil surpassed Batson’s 38 in one season! He had 46 downed inside the 20 last season, which is an NFL record.
Zastudil is set to make $1.475 million in 2013.
It would seem that Batson’s coming in to give Zastudil a push during training camp, preseason and maybe even beyond that.
