Cardinals training camp is fast approaching

Arizona Sports News online

I’m a football fan trapped in a journalist’s body.

I can’t wait for the Cardinals to kick off training camp next week, because there’s a lot of storylines that will come out of it.

The biggest storyline of all is who will actually be the starting quarterback for this team: Kevin Kolb or John Skelton?

If you’re a Cardinals fan, you know how rough Kolb’s 2011 season was, as he seemingly battled every injury known to man.

We saw John Skelton step in for Kolb and mature right before our eyes. With that maturation came a full blown quarterback controversy, which will no doubt drag on until head coach Ken Whisenhunt officially names his starter.

It’s not a reach to say that this camp is huge for both Kolb and Skelton.

I actually like having positional controversies, because all parties involved have to step their game up, knowing that the coaches are watching, and will decide on a No. 1 based on what they see.

This should be a fun battle to watch.

I’m also intrigued to see how running back Ryan Williams will do this year, as he’s bouncing back from the first major injury of his NFL career.

A healthy Williams and Beanie Wells in the backfield will give the Cardinals’ opposition fits.

It’ll also make things much easier for whomever the quarterback is, as defenses will have to play them honest, knowing that Williams and Wells can break it long at any second.

The Cardinals had a very solid draft in my opinion. They drafted seven players who can make a difference at their respective positions.

Training camp will be unlike anything these young men have ever experienced.

If they thought OTAs and the minicamp were tough, how will they respond when bodies are moving at them even faster, and they’re told they need to grasp this play and this scheme immediately?

This sport is just as much a mental game as it is a physical game. He who has their mind right will win the day and a spot on the team.
