Kevin Sumlin and the Arizona football program may look back on the 2018 season and see a one point loss at UCLA and a four point shortfall to USC and be kicking themselves. That’s because it looks like Sumlin has finally found a formula for success. Friday night the Wildcats made it two straight wins in Pac-12 play, taking down the visiting Colorado Buffaloes 42-34. Khalil Tate looked like a quarterback that could be considered a Heisman Trophy candidate. Too bad that ship sailed in the opening game loss to BYU. Tate threw 5 touchdown passes, and put up a career high 350 passing yards. Running back J.J. Taylor would gobble up 190 yards on 40 carries.
After failing to put up a point in the first quarter. Tate led the Wildcats to a 26 point second period explosion, going into the locker room at halftime with a 26-24 lead. Colorado would retake the lead in the third, when quarterback Steven Montez would toss a touchdown pass, making the score 31-26 CU. Tate would come right back and find Shawn Poindexter in the endzone to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
The Wildcats have a bye next week, with games remaining at Washington State and home to Arizona State on their schedule.
