In a game controlled by Cesar Chavez High School from start to finish, physicality and speed proved to be two crucial factors that propelled the aptly-named Champions to their third-straight section win over Central High Bobcats.
Chavez jumped on the Bobcats early on and never let up on the way to a convincing 54-14 win.
“They came to play, they came out of the locker room and were ready to roll,” Cesar Chavez head coach Manuel Alcantar said of his team’s performance. “I was proud of them, they stepped up.”
For the Champions, this win moves them to 3-0 in Metro Section play and 5-3 overall leaving them largely in the driver’s seat heading into state playoffs with just two games left.
“We’re hoping to move from that 13 seed up if we can,” coach Alcantar said. “If not, we’ll play where we’re at, we’re not worried about who we’re playing, we’re just worrying about playing in the playoffs.”
In total control of their own destiny, Cesar Chavez will host Browne High School next week before travelling to Alhambra High to wrap up the season against the 2-6 lions on the 27th.
“It’s in our hands,” coach Alcantar said simply. “The sky is the limit and there are possibilities we can reach and I hope we can reach them all.”
