Columnist: Price Tag Too Steep For Kyler Murray

Call it the calm after the storm for the Arizona Cardinals. Kyler Murray is their new starting quarterback, Josh Rosen is in Miami and only the future will tell us if Steve Keim and Michael Bidwill’s decision with the top overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft was the correct one.

One well-established local journalist already has his doubts.

“I just didn’t think the first round choice made a lot of sense,” azcentral columnist Kent Somers said to Sports360AZ.com’s Brad Cesmat via Skype. “Not after they traded up to take Josh Rosen with the 10th overall pick. I still think Josh Rosen can be a very good NFL quarterback. I’m not sold that Kyler Murray is going to be that much better. I just felt like the cost was too high.”

Somers, who covered the Cards on their beat for several years, liked some of the later picks-specifically at wide receiver. He also touched upon the tense current situation between the organization and Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson

“I was told by an NFL source that somebody inside the front office said something to him that irritated him,” Somers explained. “We know that going back to mid-season last year, Patrick asked for a trade. [He] pretty much hung Steve Wilks out to dry because news broke when they were out on the practice field and Wilks knew nothing about it.”

The new-look Cards will hold their rookie mini-camp May 10-12.
