Top seeded Corona Del Sol had won 29 straight games this season, prior to Saturday’s championship game against sixth seeded Cesar Chavez at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz.
Make that 30 straight wins, following their 66-53 victory over the Champions.
It’s Corona’s fifth state championship, and the first under head coach Sam Duane Jr.
His father, Sam Duane Sr., led the Aztecs to their last state title back in 1994.
Guard Casey Benson led the Aztecs (32-1) with 22 points, and forward Avery Moss added 18 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks.
“It was a hard fought battle,” Moss said. “Cesar Chavez is a good, aggressive team, and we had to get out there from the start.”
“My team played pretty good and we became champions,” Moss said.
Moss had a double-double at halftime: 10 points and 13 rebounds, as the Aztecs led Chavez 34-20 at the intermission.
Corona held Chavez to 31 percent shooting in the first half, and was never threatened in the second half.
Chavez finished the season 27-6.
