Mike Bell, D-Backs Director of Player Development:
“I don’t think anyone is going to say take your gear and throw it away your never going to see it again because he’s got talent back there at catcher, were just trying to let him spend a little more time in the outfield just to learn as much as he can about it. It’s somewhat up in the air but we are also trying to keep him versatile so when he gets the call-up, he can play multiple positions so we can get his bat in the lineup. He has tremendous power. You can’t teach it and it’s fun to watch.”

Notes:
(Updated 7/5) O’Brien got his shot. After absolutley obliterating the Pacific Coast League for the first 2+ months of the season, the Diamondbacks called him up to give him a shot at every day at bats. It didn’t work out. O’Brien was a strikeout machine getting rung up 25 times in just 57 at bats with just seven hits. Four of those hits went out of the ball park which we knew he was capable of but he can’t just be an all or nothing performer if he is going to have longevity at the big league level. Hopefully now sent back to Reno he can get his swagger back and the team can give him another shot later in the season.
