D-backs Split Four-Game Series with Padres

The Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up their last homestead before the All-Star Break and split the series with the  the San Diego Padres.

July 5th: Padres win 6-3
July 6th: Diamondbacks win 3-1
July 7th: Diamondbacks win 20-5
July 8th: Padres win 4-3 (16 innings)

Here are a few takeaways from the series:

A whole lot of runs

The Diamondbacks set a franchise record when they scored 20 runs in Saturday’s game. 

Some highlights from the night:

• David Peralta had five hits. 
• There were eight extra base hits.
• Hitters 2-3-4 (Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and David Peralta) went 7/13, 8 R, 6 RBI 
• Paul Goldschmidt, Nick Ahmed, David Peralta and Alex Avila all had three RBIs.
• Steven Souza Jr. hit his first home run as a Diamondback.

Extra Innings Shenanigans

A day after a 20-run game, the Diamondbacks and Padres went 16 innings. Jeff Mathis caught 15 innings then pitched the 16th inning, striking out a batter and giving up a home run to Wil Myers, which was the difference. Credit is due to Mathis, as well as San Diego catcher Austin Hedges, who caught all 16 innings for the Padres. Chris Owings also came in the game replacing A.J. Pollock, who was ejected, and made two key catches that saved multiple Padre runs from scoring.

Zack Godley

The Diamondbacks starter has had an up-and-down season after bursting onto the scene in 2017. After having arguably his worst start of the year against the San Francisco Giants on July 1st, Godley bounced back and had one of his best starts of 2018. He threw six innings, giving up four hits, a walk, a run and seven strikes on an efficient 81 pitches. Not only that, but Godley also walked and scored a run. Godley also came in during Sunday’s 16-inning affair in relief just two days after his start.

Steven Souza Jr.

Steven Souza Jr. has also had a tough debut season so far with the Diamondbacks, missing a significant chunk of the year due to injury. He is now back in right field and showing some glimpses of what Diamondback fans can expect when he is fully healthy. He hit his first home run of the season in the 20-run onslaught and also knocked in two runs in Friday’s win. Even when he records an out, he has been connecting well with the ball.

TODD WAS HERE

Todd the golden retriever became a viral hero this week after defending his owner from a rattlesnake and was bit in the process.
