Quick hits from the opening weekend of Arizona high school football.
Desert Vista lost their season opener 13-0 Saturday at San Marcos, Mission HIlls. Thunder QB Cade Van Raaphosrt had a rough debut loosing two fumbles and throwing an interception. Some special teams mistakes played a part in the Thunder loss.
Hamilton high opened up a 28-0 halftime lead at Chula Vista, EastLake High and cruised to a 28-17 victory. While several of the Hamilton players weren’t happy after the game with the final score, the Huskies now turn their attention to this Fridays showdown with Brophy Prep.
Prescott High School was the story of Friday Night. The Badgers hosted Division 4 powerhouse Blue Ridge at Bill Shepard Field in Prescott. It was the first game in Prescott following the death of the 19 firefighters who perished earlier this summer. The Badgers upset the Yellow Jackets 30-14. It was the first regular season loss for Blue Ridge since 2008. Next week the Badgers host D-3 state title runner-up Desert Edge
Phoenix Christian traveled to the town of Welton, just east of Yuma on I-8, and beat Antelope 49-6. I know Welton as the place that I stop for a good price on gas before heading into California.
Basha High traveled to Henderson, Nevada and pounded out a 41-17 win over Green Valley. Quarterback Zach Werlinger tossed four touchdowns and running back Rajhan Meriweather scored four times. Basha at Centennial next week is a game to circle on your viewing calendar.
There are several Arizona high school teams playing out of state today including Hamilton out in San Diego playing Eastlake High
