For the second consecutive night the Diamondbacks jumped all over Brewers starting pitching, cruising to a 10-6 win in Game 4 and forcing a winner-take-all Game 5 Friday afternoon in Milwaukee.
Tuesday it was rookie Paul Goldschmidt supplying the fireworks, Wednesday it was Ryan Roberts and center fielder Chris Young.
Like Goldschmidt the night before, Roberts hit a grand slam, while Young (who was moved down to seventh in the order) homered twice and scored three runs.
After the game, Gibson said “CY” takes everything in stride.
“Chris Young has been there all year for us,” he explained. “He puts himself out there to succeed. He doesn’t worry about the failures.”
Young said the Dbacks offense can be potent and that was certainly the case again on Wednesday.
“We have a lot of guys in our lineup that can hit home runs. If you happen to catch us at the right time, we can go off like that.”
It wasn’t all smooth sailing as Joe Saunders was pulled after three innings, but five relievers held the Brewers bats at bay while the Snakes worked over Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf (0-1) for eight hits and seven earned runs. The erratic lefty walked three and only threw 41 strikes of his 81 pitches.
A shell-shocked Ron Roenicke said he expects to see a much a different effort Friday at Miller Park.
“These two games are not typical of what we’ve seen all year,” the Milwaukee skipper lamented. “We didn’t pitch well and they hit very well. This team (Milwaukee) is resilient. I expect us to play a real good game Friday.”
Micah Owings (1-0) got the win in relief tossing two scoreless innings, while Goldschmidt stayed hot collecting two more hits to raise his batting average to .455 in the series.
Game 5 will feature a rematch of Game 1 as Ian Kennedy (0-1) will be opposed by Yovani Gallardo (1-0).
First pitch is set for 2:07.
