Diamondbacks held to two hits; shutout 3-0 by Angels

The Diamondbacks and Angels had a full house on hand at Salt River Fields Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately for Arizona, the opposing pitcher was someone they knew oh so well, and vice versa, as evidenced by the game’s outcome.

His name: Dan Haren, and on Tuesday, he wasn’t very inviting to Arizona hitters.

Haren gave up one hit and struck out seven over three innings, as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim blanked the Diamondbacks 3-0.

Haren spent three seasons in Arizona, before being dealt away to the Angels in 2010.

All-in-all, Angels pitchers had 14 strikeouts, and allowed just one more hit after Haren exited.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his second save.

For Arizona, Trevor Cahill suffered his second loss since coming over from the Athletics. 

Cahill had three strikeouts, but gave up two runs on five hits.

Despite the loss, Cahill feels like he’s improving with his new team.

“It took me an inning to get comfortable,” Cahill said. “After that I felt pretty good.”

Cahill was roughed up a bit in the first inning, as Los Angeles had four straight hits to open the game. They took a 1-0 lead on Alberto Callaspo’s RBI double.

The Angels increased their lead to 2-0 in the third when leadoff hitter Alexi Amarista cracked a home run to right-center.

The loss drops Arizona to 3-7, while Los Angeles moves to 6-4.

The Diamondbacks will play a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday back at Salt River Fields. They will take on the Padres at 1:10 p.m. MST. Patrick Corbin gets the nod for Arizona.

The nightcap sees them take on their stadium mates, the Colorado Rockies. The game starts at 7:10 p.m. MST, with Josh Collmenter getting the call for Arizona.
