The Diamondbacks are not strangers to adversity. Last season everyone picked them last and once they got into first, no one thought they would hold on.
This season, the expectations are there but now a different type of adversity has made its way into the Diamondbacks clubhouse.
The injury bug.
“We can’t hang our heads,” said Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers. “When you think of this ball club we overcome situations like this and hopefully we will do it again this year.”
Justin Upton has already been day to day with a thumb injury. Fluid has been drained from that bruised thumb and the team is hoping a trip to the disabled list is not necessary.
On Wednesday, two players were sent to the disabled list. The first was Geoff Blum who has a strained left oblique. Blum spent a majority of the 2012 season on the DL and it has only taken 11 games for him to return. The team brought up outfield prospect A.J. Pollock in his place.
After crashing into the wall to make a spectacular catch in left center field Tuesday, Chris Young received an MRI Wednesday which found a small tear in a ligament in his right shoulder. Landing him to the disabled list for the first time in his career.
“It’s not something I’m used to,” explained Diamondbacks center fielder Chris Young. “I’ve never been on the bench knowing that I don’t even have a little bit of a chance of getting into the game. So it’s a little awkward for me.”
This team as always will not shy away from adversity but these big injuries to the team early is definitely getting in the way of the start of a season filled with high hopes.
