The Arizona Diamondbacks kicked off their 2013 season in a 6-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ian Kennedy was stellar in his first start of the year and center fielder A.J. Pollock got off to a blazing start in his first Opening Day start with three hits and two runs batted in. Gerardo Parra added three hits as well and Martin Prado got his first two hits as a member of the Diamondbacks.
Opening Day by the numbers:
D-backs are now 10-6 on Opening Day, 6-4 at home.
D-backs’ 7-game Opening Day winning streak (since 2007) is tied for the longest active streak with the Mariners.
Monday was the first time the D-backs opened the season against a team that appeared in the Postseason the previous season. The Cardinals defeated the Braves 1-0 in the Wild Card game and Nationals, 3-2 in the Division Series and lost to the Giants 4-3 in the NLCS.
Ian Kennedy made his third straight Opening Day start for the D-backs, joins Randy Johnson (6 starts) and Brandon Webb (4) as lone pitchers with multiple starts…other opener starters: Andy Benes (1998), Javier Vazquez (2005) and Dan Haren (2010).
