Here’s a first for Chase Field: it’s going to host a doubleheader.
On August 22, the Diamondbacks will host the Miami Marlins in a day-night doubleheader.
The game originally scheduled for August 23 will be played on August 22 at 12:40 p.m. The second game will be played at 6:40 p.m. as originally scheduled.
The doubleheader came together in order to avoid playing more than 20 consecutive days without an open day.
The Diamondbacks, along with Major League Baseball and the MLB Player’s Association, approved the original schedule, but the schedule included a stretch of 23 consecutive days with a game.
The doubleheader will be the first in a domed or retractable roof stadium since September 26, 2007, when the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians played a makeup game at Safeco Field in order to make up a snowed out game in Cleveland, Ohio.
Fans who have tickets for the August 23 game are allowed to use those tickets for the 12:40 p.m. game on August 22.
