Two teams with two different pasts will face each in Saturday’s Division-II State Football Finals at Sun Devil Stadium.
On one sideline, head coach Charlie Ragle’s Chaparral Firebirds (13-1) know the routine. They’ve played in big venues. They’ve won state championships.
Their opponent is new to the dance. Cienaga High School opened just ten years ago on the outskirts of southeast Tucson. The Bobcats (13-0) like to throw with senior quarterback Michael Archie who’s connected for 17 touchdowns, with just five interceptions. Head coach Nemer Hassey’s squad averages 42 points per game.
People familiar with high school football here in the Valley know what makes the Firebirds offense click. Three-year starter and Texas signee Connor Brewer has played like a seasoned vet tossing 41 TD’s, with only five interceptions. His partner in crime offensively is senior tailback/wide receiver Davonte Neal who is over 1000 yards rushing and has scored close to 30 total touchdowns.
Brewer says the ‘Birds certainly aren’t overlooking Cienaga.
“We’re playing a good team. They’re undefeated,” Brewer said. “They’re very physical. We know we have to play (well) to beat these guys.
Kickoff is set for 5:00 Saturday in Tempe.
